80 dead, 5 missing in China cadet tragedy

China has today revised upwards the official casualty figures caused when a landslide, brought on by Typhoon 龍王 (The Dragon King), swept away buildings at the Fuzhou Command School of Armed Police in the opening days of this month.
According to China’s state media the bodies of 80 soldiers have so far been recovered while 5 remain unaccounted for.
142 military personnel were caught when the landslide struck two buildings, believed to be barracks, on the base five days ago. Most of the dead are believed to be cadets and trainees.
Despite recent pledges of openness, local media were told not to discuss the tragedy, and to only publish stories that had been approved, or provided, by Xinhua, China’s state controlled media agency.
