Beijing reopens Sino-Tibetan Border. West barely notices.

posted Sunday, 5 April 2009
China unseals the Tibetan borders to non HAN, West takes no notice.

BEIJING - State media reports China has reopened Tibet to foreign tourists almost two months after imposing a ban ahead of politically sensitive anniversaries.

The Xinhua News Agency says a group of 11 German travellers arrived in the regional capital of Lhasa late Saturday.

The agency says the group is on a six-day tour, which would take them to a number of "key scenic spots" before leaving for Nepal.

China requires foreigners to obtain special permission to visit Tibet and routinely bars them from all Tibetan areas of the country during sensitive periods to keep news of unrest from leaking out.

The latest travel ban on foreigners came in February and March because of the Tibetan New Year and anniversaries of Tibetan uprisings against Chinese rule.

Foreign visitors also were not allowed in ethnically Tibetan areas in Qinghai, Gansu and Sichuan provinces.

Even after all these years ACB still finds it incredibly that China can arbitrarily cut one of its neighbors off from he outside world for two months while the West stands by and does nothing. In fact there is so little comment in the West regarding this that most Westeners don't even know that this has happened. When the Soviets did this back in the day at least the Westmade a big deal about it, even if they didn't actually do anything more substantial.

ACB is afraid that this is just another example of Western hypocrisy. Foreigner governemnts bleat on about freedom and democracy and self determination, but only when it suits them.  Not when it 's for a worth while cause that doesn't offer them anything in return.

It would appear that China is just too important ot the Western governments, and Tibet is just too insignificant - a far off land filled with funny little yellow people - for them to raise even token protest.

One thing is for certain, if somebody were to do this to a Western country it would be all over the news. Maybe England should shut of Northern Ireland for a couple of weeks? just to see what would happen, or maybe Mexico should annex some of the US border towns that serve as staging osts for the drugs money and the guns that are ripping their country to shreds as ACB types. You can be certain that you'd see Western Governments standing up and metaphorically banging thier shoes on the table at the UN if that were to happen.

Maybe if Tibet had oil?

Do you think that Tibet should be more important to the westerner press than the Chinese press ?

ACB thinks that the Chinese press is censored, so it has an excuse not to publish stories about Tibet, but the Western press is supposed to be the voice of freedom and democracy therefore it has a duty to publish stories about Tibet.

You are correct. If Tibet had oil, it would make a great deal of difference in the West. But then the West is good at hypocrisy; even when the UK government 'turns a blind eye to torture' (allegedly), while it lectures the Chinese government on human rights.

Maybe China has closed off Tibet for foreign tourists many times before and therefore it is not considered big news?

I believe there was quite a lot of coverage during the protests last year, no? People died then. Now some foreign tourists are allowed to take tours in Tibet, I choose not to pick it up, and suddenly I am hypocritical?

Best regards, the West

No, you're hypocritical for yammering on about this, that, and the other, when it's some petty thing or something that can't be helped in a developing country, and but not even batting an eyelid when one country imposes itself on another like the Mainland has done to Tibet.

Over the last two months the West has bleated on and on about China infringing other people's copyrights, but has paid no attention to the Tibetan people's human rights. Now, that's hypocrisy. The West can take China to the WTO over counterfeit CDs, but it can't take Beijing to task over persecuting an ethnic people to the point of genocide?

ACB: Over the last two months, I've noticed a spike in American media coverage of Tibet, but I cannot recall a single instance of an article on copyright. Maybe we are watching different news outlets or something. Actually, considering how generally poor is the American media coverage of international news--i.e. we don't care about it unless it's some hapless nation we suddenly want to bomb the ever-living crap out of--it's noteworthy that they have covered Tibet as much as they have. And I did see this border story covered somewhere; I just cannot recall where.

Maybe a bit more "Chinese blogger" and a bit less "angry" is in order. Cheers!

Opening Tibet travel is old news. Actually closing Tibet is really old news, so reopening Tibet has even less of a chance of getting space. It's all an internal China issue. Recently it's the G20 Summit, cracking protester's heads in Britain, economic stimulus to combat the Global Financial meltdown, sending more troops into Afganistan, Obama-mania yada, yada yada. Only laowai wanting to travel to Tibet are interested, so it's not published.

Miley Cyrus doing a porno shoot is old news, Beijing suppressing Tibet is tantamount to Genocide.

Maybe America is afraid to tackle this story because it hits too close to home. ACB recalls the murder of Native American being considered an "Internal Issue", too.

I don't think that this is so much a case of hypocrisy, ACB, as it a case of dullened, torpid disinterest. Beijing has let it be known, far and wide, that Tibet is a hands-off matter. Any foreign nation that upbraids Beijing for its tyranny in Tibet has to export a container of hankies so the Party heads can wipe their eyes and blow their noses for several months. Witness what France and Germany just recently went through for having H.H. drop by for a day or two last year. If you don't want to get a 3 yr. old temper tantrum out of Beijing, you don't even mention the place. Yes, if Tibet had more natural resources than Yak skins, it would have gained more attention. But that would have been long ago. In general, Tibet gains the spotlight several times a year in western mainstream media. Opening, closing and reopening borders isn't a real biggie when it comes to the bigger picture of Tibet. I concur with much of what Don Tai said, and elaborate on it.

So, if Japan were to annex a couple of big chunks os SE Asia, once more, then threaten to stop selling Playstations to the US, America would let it be? Oh, yeah, they probably would, wouldn't they.

Once again, the West is putting its own economic interest ahead of the human rights of millions of people. So long as American's have wide screen TVs and live insulated lives they can ignore the suffering of a lot of funny little men in funny little orange robes in a funny little country that they couldn't find on a map.

The moral of this story is that if you're less important to the US than the people who are persecuting you, then you're on your own.

Yeah, and gay socialist Republicans are ..... oh, what's the point? You're nuts, you're plain and simple freaking nuts. There's no such thing as a an American-Jewish-Indian element, and the Taliban are the Taliban and are unashamedly admiting to each and everything that they are doign because they are proud of it and because they sincerely believe that ti si the right thing to do. They don't need to be framed for any of it, they shout about about doing it and the more people who hear them the happier they are about it.

ACB doesn't have the English to explain how wrong your statement is on so many levels so ACB will stick with what they know, you're a delusional fruit loop nut cake wacko with a cherry on top. Now go before ACB unleashes the Fenqing on you.
