China Voices 3: China, the Chinese economy, and the World.

posted Thursday, 19 January 2006
While Chairman Mao, with his image adorning everything from the one Yuan piece to the Tiananmen Gate, can rightfully be called the father of the People's Republic of China, there many who are in little doubt that China's rising economic prosperity owes a great deal more to the 四個現代化 (four modernizations) of late 鄧小平 (Deng Xiaoping), than it does to the revolutionary spirit of his predecessor, and who consider 鄧 (Deng) to be the father of 'Modern China'.

Whatever your standpoint though, there are few who will not openly say that, of the reforms pioneered in by 鄧 (Deng), and carried on by his successors, one of the most important to China's current growth, was undoubtedly the opening up of the Chinese economy to the outside world. A move which now allows many in China to celebrate the advantages brought by foreign investment in the Chinese economy, but which has also given many cause to protest at foreign interference in Chinese businesses and China's impact on global trade.

In accordance with this, today's edition of 'China Voices' is proud to welcome a young Chinese lady expressing her views on the impact that China's new openness had had on the economies of both China and the world, and asking that all important question "Could this have happened in a Vacuum?"

Do you think China will be able to be open to foreign investment and still be closed to cultural and political and language influences? I know Chinese leaders will try, but how successful can they be?
