China Voices: Foreign Trade - A view from the front line

posted Saturday, 26 November 2005
When looking at China and its growing economy, it can be all too easy for observers in Japan and the west to view things from one of three perspectives
  • The viewpoint of a foreign business interest; which sees China as being an investment opportunity where low wages can be exchanged for cheap goods.
  • The Viewpoint of a foreign foreign manufacturer; which sees China as being one great remorseless factory bent on supplanting to supplant western industry with low cost low quality goods.
  • The viewpoint of an NGO; which sees low paid workers churning out cheap goods, but which hopes that China’s economic boom-time might one day filter down to China’s poor.
However, what has not been done so much is to see things from the perspective of those on the front line of China’s economy. Not the board room executives who are raking in money hand over fist. Not the poor farmers who are hearing about an economic boom-time; but who are still waiting to see it, but instead the new generation of businessmen and traders who form the vital link between East and West, but who often receive little acknowledgement from either side.

Here, a young Chinese businessman describe three reasons why he enjoys trading with the west and how he feels trading with foreign companies is beneficial not just for China’s growth, but also for his own.

Great idea regarding the Chinese voices. It's a great feature. One side note is that perhaps you can set the settings so once we click on it, it'll automatically open up (You'll need to make sure it's a Real or Windows Media tagline). I don't have a problem finding Window's media classic, but others might.
