While the Chinese and Japanese governments might be more divided than ever over political and historical issues, it remains true that there are some areas that tie the Chinese and Japanese people together which are simply to strong to be denigrated by anything that China's seething 憤青 (Fenqing)
, and Japan's discredited nationalist minority, might say about each other.
Though often overlooked, amidst modern day conflicts and confrontations over whose grandfather did what to whom, and who denied that it was done, one of the areas where ties remain strong, and feelings remain warm, is the field of art and art appreciation. With both countries holding a mutual appreciation and respect for each others artists and artisans, both past and present, that transcends the current political freeze.
In light of continuing strong artistic ties, it has been announced that China has, this month, dispatched a 60 strong delegation of artists to take part in a week long cultural exchange in Japan.
According to media reports, the groups, which includes a number of internationally renounced mainland painters and photographers, left Beijing yesterday and will be engaging in a one week tour of Japanese-Honshu, the most southerly the home island, in order to record the area's historic and scenic sites in picture.
In addition to touring the island, the groups is also scheduled to take part in a number of cultural exchanges and discussions with Japanese artists and art lovers, and will be an holding an exhibition of their works upon their return to the mainland.
The group exchange was made possible thanks to the collaboration of a number NGO in both countries, and it is hoped that it will further strengthen the cultural bonds between the Chinese and Japanese people, even as their governments draw further apart.
