Lu was a freelance writer who was detained while living in the city of Wuhan in Hubei Province. His detention came soon after articles that he wrote detailing official corruption in China and growing incidents of rural unrest, as peasants became increasingly unhappy about their treatment by the government, and their continuing poverty, was published by several internationally based internet sites.
On 20 April 2001, Lu was he was charged with "inciting to subvert state power," an accusation commonly used against writers and professionals who contradict the official state line, or who speak out against the government in China.
According to his original sentence, Lu’s is expected to be released in March 2005.
