posted Monday, 28 February 2005
Name: Wang Jinbo
Agency: Freelance
Date Imprisoned: 13 December 2001
Charge: Incitement, Subversion
Sentence: 4 years

Wang is an essayist and freelance journalist who posted works through the internet. Wang was in contact with an unknown number of overseas groups and is a member of the China Democracy Party, a pro democracy organization that has been deemed dangerous, and is banned in China.

In May 2001, Wang was detained after he sent an essay to a foreign publishing organization in which he explained why he believed that the 1989 pro democracy movement in Beijing should not be considered ‘counterrevolutionary’. The essay also called for the government to change its official position on the movement. In October 2001, 5 months after his initial detention, Wang was charged with "inciting to subvert state power." in relation to his essay on the pro democracy movement.

On 14 November, Wang was sentenced to 4 years imprisonment by a court in Shandong Province. The trial was closed, but several of Wang’s relatives were permitted to attend.

Prior to his arrest in 2001, Wang had been detained on a number of previous occasions, some of which came after he signing of open letters to Chinese and international bodies.

Early in 2001, Wang signed an open letter to the International Olympic Committee, calling on the organization to highlight the plight of ‘political’ prisoners in China, he was subsequently detained in February, a matter of days before IOC representatives were due to visit Beijing.

Wang documented some of his experiences and views in essays that were later published on the internet, including "My Account of Police Violations of Civil Rights," in which Wang recalls his detention by authorities in January 2001, and how he was held for 20 hours without access to food or heat.

One thing seems clear: Chinese authorities are well aware of the power of the internet, more so, I would venture, than are American government who seem to be oblivious to the power of this communication tool. Maybe eventually to their detriment.
