Journalist Case File: Zhu Yufu
posted Tuesday, 8 February 2005
Name: Zhu Yufu
Agency: 在野党 (Political opposition party)
Date Imprisoned: September 1999
Charge: subversion
Sentence: 7 Years, plus three years removal of political rights
Zhu was involved in the publication of an underground magazine and an active member of the China Democratic Party, a pro democracy movement that has been banned by the Chinese government, who advocated the democratic reforms of the Chinese political system and increased social freedoms for the Chinese people.
Zhu, and fellow pro democracy activist Xu Guang, were detained in September 1999 and charged with sedition for their part in the production of 在野党 (Political opposition party) a pro reform magazine, and for distributing articles and essays calling for democracy and social reform through the internet.
The arrest of Zhu and Xu closely followed the detention of Wu Yilong, another senior member of the China Democracy Party, who was detained on 26 April of that year as part of government measures to prevent protests during the 10th anniversary of the crushing of the 1989 pro democracy rallies in Beijing.
Zhu’s trial was widely criticized in the foreign press, and was described as being a sham by the New York Times. Since his detention, Zhu has been kept incommunicado and has been forbidden access to news papers and stories.
In 2002 Zhu refused to make a self confession expressing regret for his actions and as a result his prison regime was further restricted.
