This Saturday, Chinese security forces formerly detained Lu Gengsong; a freelance journalist and former teacher at a regional police academy, on charges of "Incitement to subvert the state's power".
The charges come after Lu published an articles accusing Zhejiang officials of collaborating with real-estate developers to illegally seize and develop land.
Lu, was first detained on 24 August this year. At which time he was charged with "Incitement to subvert the state's power"; a catchall phrase often used by Chinese authorities to refer to any activity which embarrasses the state by pointing out its failings, or any statement calling for change, as well as possessing "state secrets"; a category which has, in the past, been used to refer to anything from secret orders instructing journalists to inform on their colleagues to the reports on deaths caused by typhoon strikes. The latter of which charges was eventually dropped.
