The name Hong Lok Street probably doesn’t mean very much to most people, but it is a name that has a distinct emotional attachment for me.
Better known as ‘Bird Street’, Hong Lok Street was a slice of ‘Old China’ amidst the hustle and bustle of Hong Kong’s Mong Kok district, which served as a market and meeting place for bird and cricket enthusiasts in pre handover Hong Kong.
Unfortunately, Honk Lok Street was torn down a number of years ago to make room for newer, more expensive, buildings. Given Hong Kong’s lack of building space, I don’t really blame anybody, but it was a shame to loose somewhere with so much character.
I would have liked to have been able to post some photographs of my own of ‘Bird Street’ but don’t have any. So instead I have here a few photographs of the Yuen Po Street Bird Market that was built as a memorial of sorts to old Hong Lok Street.
It’s not quite the same, and it lacks a lot of the spirit of ‘Bird Street’, at least the memory lives on.
I like the next-to-the-last picture of Yuen Po Street. The last picture
looks like one of those old-time photos. Thanks for the look at an
interesting place!
Pretty good site my friend! good luck!
