One of the many unspoken truths in life is this "Perspective is everything".
Two people might witness the exact same event from a slightly different perspective, and see very different things.
- One man's liberator is another man's dictator
- One man's terrorist is another man's freedom fighter
- One man's act of self defense is another's act of aggression
Today, it is the latter of the three that is of interest.
Now...Turn it around
In recent years, the Chinese army has become smaller while its budget has become bigger. Allowing it to better train and equip its soldiers without any loss in capability. The Chinese airforce has purchased Russian made SU-37, armed them with Aircraft carrier killing missiles, and has recently rolled out the J-10, a fighter able to go toe-to-toe with the US's F-16s and F-18s. While the Chinese navy has been beefing up its force with submarines and Russia built Aegis vessels.
China holds that its military modernization is not a threat, that it is purely looking to defend its own interests from a hostile outsiders, and that the changes in its force merely represent the fact that it is moving away from the concept of a "peoples' war" - the use of massed low technology solutions against a smaller but more advanced enemy - to a more tactical model - the replacement of manpower with strategically deployed hardware.
Washington sees things differently. According to the US, these changes represent a direct challenge to American's role as the chief military power in the Pacific, and a decisive threat to peace and stability in the regions. Not to mention to the disputed island of Chinese Taiwan, which China claims as its own.
...And Again
This weekend
Kadena Air Base located in on scenic Okinawa island - just outside sneezing distance of Chinese maritime claims - is set to receive a squadron of F-22 Raptors. A fifth generation supercruising stealth fighter that outclass pretty much anything that has ever flown.
According to Washington, the deployment, which is set to last 3 months, is a peaceful gesture that will increase regional stability by acting as a deterrent to unnamed factions who may feel inclined to take unspecified actions.
Now, imaging what China thinks of this........ and what Washington would think if, for example, China sent some submarines to help stabilize the waters around Cuba.
