Project Green Dam: 3D Crabs in Action

posted Monday, 7 September 2009
Here are a couple of examples of ACB's draft Harmonious Crabs in action.

The first image shows the 3D crab scaled to fit on Green Dam girl's cap as is traditional. It's quite small so the loss lack of detail isn't a big issue.

Crab on Cap

Girls, this is what could happen to you if you are lax with your hygiene, or your morals. It looks as if Green Dam Girl has picked up some invaders who are heading off to launch a sortie against the blameless (and hygienic) Chinese Internet user. It look a lot better in high resolution, but ACB is already chewing through bandwidth at an alarming rate as it is so a low resolution image will have to do for now.
Crabs on Legs
The crabs legs are actually realistically positioned as if they were gripping on to Green Dam Girl's legs, and the crab in the foreground is positioned to be standing on the same floor surface as Green Dam Girl. This is much easier to do in 3D with minimal artistic tallent (EG, about the level that ACB has), than it is in 2D as you do not need to do the perspective and levels manually.

Note how the claws, which were created in a professional quality 3D package have much more detailed shadows and high lights than their low detail shells which were created from deformed primitives in a standard commercial rendering package. ACB will tune this up later on before the final version. Due to time constraints ACB hasn't positioned any lighting for the 3D rendering, which is why the foreground crab is so dark. This one can be fixed in the final version by positioning a 3D light source, or in post production using Photoshop.
