Public Safety Notice for foreign residents of Beijing

posted Saturday, 9 April 2005
Foreign residents in Beijing are advised to avoid the Zhongguancun Hailong Plaza electronics market in Haidian between the morning of 9 April (Saturday) and the even of 10 April (Sunday).

Reports originating from a US source have indicated that this is to be the location of an anti-Japanese demonstration during the weekend. Should a demonstration occur, and there is likely to be some risk to property and personal safety for non Chinese in the vicinity owing to large crowds and the possible infiltration of extremists.

Officially, such demonstrations are prohibited without formal government consent, but the anti-Japanese nature makes government intervention at any real level unlikely.

In the event of a demonstration occurring, Japanese residents in Beijing, and those of non Chinese Asian origin who could be mistaken for Japanese citizens, are advised to act with heightened caution. This warning extends to overseas Chinese with non mainland accents and mannerisms.

Non Japanese residents are also advised to avoid the region due to large expected crowds, and the possibility that nationalist elements may target foreigners in general.

This warning was provided by an outside source and has not been validated by this website. Information contained may be inaccurate and may have been spread/gathered for alternative purposes, including anti-Chinese purposes, but has been provided as a precaution.

Too worked up?

You try telling that to a Chinese American friend of mine who was mistaken for Japanese because she didn't act 'mainland' enough. I'm sure that she will be reasured by your words.

How about those Chinese in Shanghai and Beijing who own Japanese restaurants. Or the Chinese workers at those department stores that were ransacked two weeks ago.

I posted this notice because several western consulats were worried that things could get out of hand, and that tourists might get caught up in the crowds.

Even a peascful demonstration can be intimidating for a western foreigner who cannot understand the chants and who cannot read the banners, and anywhere where a large crowd gathers there are dangers from crush injuries etc.
