Tiananmen Square -15 year afterward the masacre

As with the events of fifteen years ago, the Chinese censors have been out in force this week over the threat of protests in Tiananmen square Beijing. A number of prominent websites and broadcasts have been blocked, some on mass (Wikipedia) and other censored more selectively over the week. CNN, an American news channel that is available in China through hotels, tourist services and in some corporations was selectively blocked to remove all mention of Tiananmen from its broadcasts and local media here has made no mention whatsoever of the massacre or that it happened fifteen years ago this month.

During the original events of the 4th of June 1989 Chinese censors and low media coverage within the country prevented the majority of the population from hearing about the protests in Tiananmen square for some time after they had been brutally suppressed by the military.

"The Chinese people did not see the tens of thousands of demonstrators crowding central Beijing and occupying Tiananmen Square for seven weeks.

They also did not see how the protest movement was violently suppressed by military tanks and troops 15 years ago on June 4."

Even fifteen years later mention of the massacre is prohibited by the Government as are protests related to the 4th of June 1989. Discussion of Tiananmen within the government is also outlawed.

In defense of China, something that is not easy when it comes to Tiananmen square, the Chinese army did not willingly suppress the demonstrators and many officers were court-martialed for refusing to act against their own people.
