Scare Pollution - A personal tale

posted Friday, 3 August 2007

Whether its a story about an noxious  mixture of sand and smog turning the skies above Beijing yellow, or a glut of industrial waste giving the Pearl River an interesting sheen,  these days it's pretty much impossible to listen to the foreign media without encountering at least one story about pollution in China.

Well, it's now time for ACB to relate an anecdote about the air quality in their own back yard. As such, ACB would ask readers to direct their attention to the image below, depicting the  inside of a Personal Computer found about 200 meters from ACB's desk.

If air pollution can leave deposits like this on the inside of a Personal Computer, just imagine what it does to those of us who breath this stuff in daily. Hint, the inside of this Personal Computer should be black and green, not white.

 Oh, my poor poor lungs

Computers, like all household electronics, require a good cleaning from time to time in order to keep them running at optimal performance levels. I wouldn't be surprised if that computer runs quite a bit slower than it normally would. What made you take it apart....frequent overheating?

It's not my Personal Computer, it is used by a Westerner who works in a building close to me. I was so amazed when I saw it that I had to take a picture and show everybody. What is in that Personal Computer is also in the air that I breath. Then again, I'm used to breathing in dirty Mainland air.

As for the reason why this particular Personal Computer was opened, it was to be upgraded.

I'm not sure this can be blamed on China.

This computer looks to be almost 10 years old and the deposits look suspiciously like cigarette ash. Any chance the owner of this thing is a smoker?

No, it's not cigarette ash. Though I'd really hate to see the lungs of a person who smoked that much. The Personal Computer is also not all that old. The chip set is still on sale.

I know exactly what it the formation is and where it comes from. It's ground calcinous mineral dust. It's used all over Asia to thicken Tofu and around the world in the construction industry. It's packaged locally.

Back when I used a desktop, I ended up taking the tower apart to upgrade the RAM and the inside looked very similar to this one. Nothing a vacuum with a brush and a can of air duster won't cure.

Air duster? Is that a filter of some kind? Does it come large enough to cover windows to keep the dust out while they are open?

If this dust is true, it's terrible! When I took apart my old computer, it was only abit of dust over 5 years.
